Public Schools Need More Than Support. They Need People to Show Up.
There is no shortage of people who say they support public schools.
This Saturday, we have a chance to show it.
I’m in my 15th year as a Texas public school teacher. I see every day what our schools are being asked to carry.
Teachers are teaching, counseling, mentoring, protecting and filling gaps that stretch far beyond the classroom. Parents are watching districts make difficult decisions with limited resources. School employees are doing more to keep everything running. And communities across North Texas are asking a basic question:
Are we going to keep investing in the public schools that serve all of us?
That question has become even more urgent as Texas spends taxpayer dollars on its new private-school voucher program.
The debate in Austin makes public education sound like an abstract policy issue.
It isn’t.
It is the teacher staying late to help a struggling student.
It is the bus driver who knows every child on the route.
It is the counselor helping a student through a crisis.
It is the coach, librarian, paraprofessional, cafeteria worker and administrator who keep a school community functioning every day.
And it is the neighborhood school that opens its doors to the children who live here.
That is worth defending.
Join Us Saturday in Allen
On Saturday, September 12, teachers, parents, school employees, students and neighbors from across Collin County are coming together for a Rally for Public Schools.
We are going to hear directly from the people living these issues. We are going to talk about what our districts are facing, what state policy is doing to public education and what our communities can do about it.
Most importantly, we are going to make something visible:
There are a lot of us who still believe public schools matter.
You do not have to be a teacher to attend.
If you are a parent, grandparent, former educator, school employee, student, or simply someone who believes every child deserves a strong public school, this rally is for you.
Public education belongs to all of us.
Saturday is a chance to show up for it.
